CosmoClub: Supernovae Ia and Cosmology

Published byArthur Loureiro on October 30, 2014 at 13:10.

Friday, October 31, we’ll have Pedro Bernardinelli talking about “Supernovae Ia and Cosmology”.
31/10 – 1pm @ Jayme Tiomno Room

Abstract:
We will discuss superficially the main supernova types: Ia, Ib, Ic and II, together with an overview of their spectra and light-curves. Then, we will proceed to details about supernovae Ia, detailing what makes this particular type different from the others. After that, the SALT and SALT2 models of supernovae spectral surfaces will be introduced, whose applications lead to the use of supernovae Ia as distance indicators for cosmologically-significant distances. Finally, the SNANA software package, which allows simulations of supernovae observations, will be shown.
